Why Choose Moab Utah to Elope?

We think the best way to answer this is simple: Moab offers one of Utah’s most unique and breathtaking landscapes. If you’ve ever imagined exchanging vows beneath a red rock arch or wandering through desert mesas with views that make you feel small in the best way possible then Moab is the place for your elopement.

Living just three hours away, we find ourselves escaping to this paradise often. But let’s be real, we’re all about Moab outside of summer. With temps above 100 degrees and crowds of tourists everywhere, we avoid it in the heat of summer. The best time to explore Moab is during the off-season when it’s quieter and cooler.

Why Choose Moab Utah to Elope?

What makes Moab special compared to other elopement destinations?

Well, another huge bonus? Moab is home to not one but two epic national parks (Arches and Canyonlands), a stunning state park (Dead Horse Point), and vast stretches of public land perfect for adventure.

When To Elope in Moab

When to Elope in Moab: Best Time and Seasons

When planning your Moab elopement, choosing the right time of day is key. Moab is known for its stunning landscapes, but the desert sun can be harsh during the day. That’s why sunrise and sunset are the magical moments we recommend. These times bring the softest light, perfect for those gorgeous, golden hour photos. Plus, the cooler temps at these times are much more comfortable, especially in summer.

If you're eloping in the warmer months, sunrise can be a lifesaver. Not only will you avoid the midday heat, but you'll also beat the crowds. It’s a peaceful and intimate time to say your vows, surrounded by nothing but the desert waking up. If you’re more into sunset vibes, it's equally breathtaking but can be a bit busier, especially during peak season.

Some couples like to split their day, sunrise for the ceremony and sunset for some epic post-vow photos. This way, you get the best of both worlds without battling the heat or the crowds!

Ideal Weather
  • Best time of year to elope in Moab for ideal weather

Sunrise vs Sunset

In our experience the best time to elope in Moab is during the shoulder seasons: spring (March to April) and fall (October to November). The temperatures are mild, ranging from the 60s to 80s, which makes adventuring through the red rock landscapes much more enjoyable. Spring brings a touch of desert bloom, while fall offers cooler air and the iconic desert sunsets,. Plus, you’ll avoid the scorching summer heat and the bigger tourist crowds.

If you want the most private and relaxed experience, avoid Jeep Week (usually in late March or early April) and always aim for a weekday elopement. The light is best at sunrise or sunset, giving you both the dreamy colors and a more intimate vibe.

  • Sunrise vs. sunset: What’s better for photos and avoiding crowds?

Sunrise is the best choice if you want to avoid crowds completely, popular spots are usually quiet in the early morning, and the soft, golden light creates an incredible atmosphere. It’s also cooler during warmer months.

Sunset, on the other hand, gives you those iconic desert colors and can be perfect for a dramatic, golden-hour glow. However, it’s more likely to draw crowds, especially at well-known spots. If you’re set on sunset, choosing a weekday and a less popular location can help you keep things more private.

What to Expect in Every Season for Your Moab Elopement

Summer (June, July, August) in Moab is, in one word, hot. Think triple digits, we highly recommended avoiding this time of the year. However, if you’re set on a summer elopement, sunrise is definitely your best friend. It’s cooler, quieter, and you’ll avoid the scorching midday sun. While sunset can still be beautiful, the heat lingers, so pack plenty of water and plan for some shade where you can.

Winter (December, January, February) in Moab brings cooler temperatures, often in the 30s and 40s during the day, which can actually be pretty refreshing compared to other parts of the country. And if you’re lucky? You might even catch some snow on the red rocks, a rare and stunning contrast. Winter also means fewer crowds, making it one of the quietest times to elope. Just bundle up for those chilly evenings!

Spring (March, April, May) and Fall (September, October, November) are what we call the “sweet spot” seasons. They’re perfect for avoiding the intense summer heat and the cold of winter, with temps ranging from the 60s to the 80s. In fall, the La Sal Mountains might even have a dusting of snow, creating a beautiful contrast against the desert.

Permits and Legal

How to Elope in Moab: Permits and Legal Details

We get it—navigating permits and legal details can feel overwhelming, but it’s actually pretty straightforward! The requirements will vary depending on your chosen location, so we’ve broken it down by location below.

Plus, we’ll walk you through all the legal steps to get married in Utah. If you have any questions or want to dive deeper into the details, you can schedule a free consultation call with us.

What permits do you need to elope in Moab

What permits do you need to elope in Moab?

Here’s a quick rundown of what permits you’ll need for each spot:

Arches National Park:

To elope in Arches, you'll need a Special Use Permit, which costs $185. You can apply for it up to a year in advance, but it’s best to do it as early as possible—at least 4 weeks ahead of your date. The permit doesn’t guarantee park access during the busy season (April 1 – October 31), so you’ll also need a timed entry ticket. There’s no reserved parking, so carpooling is a smart move if you’re bringing a group. Here's the link to apply.

Canyonlands National Park:

Just like Arches, you’ll need a Special Use Permit to elope here. It’s easy to apply directly through the park’s website, and the permit ensures your ceremony stays in line with park rules and protects the natural beauty. Apply as early as possible to avoid delays! More details can be found here.

Dead Horse Point State Park:

For Dead Horse Point, you’ll also need a special use permit, and the process is straightforward. Plan to apply at least 30 days in advance to make sure everything goes smoothly. The park offers stunning views with super easy access for your elopement, and fewer crowds compared to the national parks.

BLM Land (Bureau of Land Management):

If privacy is what you're after, BLM land is the way to go. No permits are needed for some of these areas (like Castleton Tower and Fisher Towers), but for others, your photographer (that's us!) can take care of it since we hold a BLM permit. BLM spots give you way more flexibility, and there’s so much open space that you won’t have to worry about crowds or strict regulations.

NOTE: You'll need to apply for the permit yourself, as photographers or planners can’t submit it for you, but don’t worry—it’s an easy process! We’re more than happy to help if you have any questions along the way.

Legal steps for making your Moab elopement official

To legally get married in Utah, you’ll need a marriage license, a licensed officiant, and two witnesses. You can apply for your marriage license in person, and both of you should be present at the appointment. The great news? You can do this a few days before your elopement, there’s no waiting period, so you can get married as soon as you have your license!

Need an officiant?

We’ve got you covered! As a husband-and-wife photography team, we can also act as your two witnesses and we are both ordained to officiate a ceremony.

Your Options for Getting Married in Moab:

Option #1:  If you’re short on time or prefer to skip the in-person visit, Utah County allows you to apply for your marriage license online—super convenient, right?
Just a heads-up: since everything’s digital, you won’t have the physical license in hand on your elopement day. Plus, keep in mind that the license is only valid for 32 days, so don’t apply too early, or you might find yourself needing to get a new one!

Option #2: If you prefer the classic route, you can grab your marriage license from the local clerk’s office in Moab. While your officiant usually takes care of returning the paperwork, some couples like to drop it off themselves for quicker processing.

Option #3: Want to keep things simple? You can take care of the courthouse paperwork in your home state before your Moab elopement. It’s a great way to keep the day stress-free!
